Signs and Symptoms of Arthritis | ORTHAYU

Swelling and inflammation of a bone joint in the body which is causing pain and stiffness is generally termed as Arthritis.

As the above definition suggest,  its most common signs and symptoms are related with the joints. Depending on its type , signs and symptoms may vary. But generally they are :

Signs and symptoms

  • Pain

Any movement involving joints will cause a brief pain in that joint. Initially the pain might not be very acute and consistent and hence one generally ignores it leading to escalation.

  • Stiffness

One will notice a stiffness in the affected joint, especially when the movement of that joint has not taken place for a while (say after a sleep or after seating at a place for long time)

  • Swelling

One may find light to high swelling on the skin over affected joint. This swelling need not be visible to eye, but one may feel it when touched with the finger.

  • Grating

One gets a feeling that two bones are rubbing on each other near the affected joint, sometimes causing a sound.

  • Decreased range of motion

The joint may not able to complete its motion to the fullest capacity or sometimes there is lesser strength in the motion.

Other versions of arthritis

In few versions of arthritis, (typically Infectious or Juvenile ), Fever which comes and goes is a major symptom.

In Juvenile Arthritis, Weight loss resulting from loss of appetite is another symptom.

In Osteoarthritis, which is a common form of arthritis, lumps of bones form around the joints.

In Rheumatoid Arthritis, sometimes joints on both side are body mirror similar behavior.
